This residency status enables foreign personnel who possess a certain level of expertise and skills and can work as immediate contributors in industries that continue to struggle to secure sufficient human resources despite efforts to improve productivity and secure domestic labor. In the automobile transportation sector, Specified Skilled Worker (i) is designated as an eligible field. In the shipbuilding and marine equipment industry, both Specified Skilled Worker (i) and Specified Skilled Worker (ii) are designated as eligible fields. The Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK) serves as the implementing body for examinations conducted to confirm the expertise and skills of applicants in the automobile transportation sector and the shipbuilding and marine equipment industry (the Specified Skilled Worker (i) Evaluation Test for the Automobile Transportation Sector, the Specified Skilled Worker (i) Test for the Shipbuilding and Marine Equipment Industry, and the Specified Skilled Worker (ii) Test for the Shipbuilding and Marine Equipment Industry). Overview of the Examination Specified Skilled Worker (i) Evaluation Test for the Automobile Transportation Sector ・This is an examination to confirm that foreign nationals who wish to obtain the residency status “Specified Skilled Worker” and work in Japan in the automobile transportation sector (truck, taxi, bus) possess the necessary knowledge and experience to serve as immediate contributors by utilizing certain expertise and skills. ・For details on eligibility, types of examinations, and test implementation countries, please refer to the link below. Specified Skilled Worker Examination for the Automobile Transportation Sector > External Link Exam Details Specified Skilled Worker (i) Evaluation Test for the Automobile Transportation Sector: This is an examination to confirm that foreign nationals who wish to obtain the residency status “Specified Skilled Worker” and work in Japan in the automobile transportation sector (truck, taxi, bus) possess the necessary knowledge and experience to serve as immediate contributors by utilizing certain expertise and skills. Eligibility: ① Must be at least 17 years old on the date of the exam. *For exams in Indonesia, the minimum age is 18. ② Must hold a valid Japanese or foreign driver’s license on the exam date. ③ Must have a valid residency status when taking the exam domestically. ④ Must have a valid residency status when taking the exam domestically. ⑤ Must not be a person without a passport issued by a foreign government or regional authority specified by the Minister of Justice in the notice as cooperating with the smooth execution of a deportation order. Passing the exam does not guarantee the granting of the “Specified Skilled Worker” residency status. The issuance of a Certificate of Eligibility or permission to change residency status may be denied after examination during the application process. Even if the Certificate of Eligibility is issued, visa issuance is separately subject to review by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a visa may not be granted. If an excess payment occurs due to payer error, the excess minus a 3,000 JPY refund processing fee will be refunded.
